Rochester Midland's Community Commitment

United Way Day of Caring

One of RMC's core company values is community commitment. The people of RMC have long been active in their communities and generous with both their time and their charitable contributions. For many years, RMC has been associated with the United Way of Greater Rochester, one of the leading charitable organizations in the United States. (The Rochester area, in fact, ranks number two in the entire USA for per capita giving!) In 1999, RMC was once again a "Top 50" leader in terms of corporate donation dollars per employee, percent employee participation, and individual donation dollars per employee. Our people also regularly volunteer their time for special events like the United Way "Day of Caring."

Other organizations we support include the Red Cross (averaging 35 units of blood per year from RMC employees for the last twelve years!), Breast Cancer Awareness Day, The Al Sigl Center, the Humane Society of Rochester at Lollypop Farm, as well as a number of others.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of America

In the Fall of 2000 we were the primary sponsor for an exciting event called the Erie Canal Run, proceeds for which went to support Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Greater Rochester. This unprecedented undertaking featured a team of eighteen runners and six accompanying bicyclists that made the 362 mile trek from Albany to Buffalo in a round the clock relay over a period of three days. Coincidentally, this event occurred on the eve of the 175th anniversary of the opening of the Canal in October, 1825. We finished up in Niagara Falls Park with a celebration and festivities, with lots of kids and their "Bigs" along to enjoy the fun. Click here for full story and photos.

About five years ago several RMC employees were talking at lunch about safety - safety in the parking lots and between our two buildings - about being afraid of going into and out of the buildings. Mike Coyner was present and challenged them to come up with a solution. Instead of a solution that involved fencing or walls and seeing the neighborhood as an adversary, the team chose to be proactive, to become a more active part of the neighborhood. Thus the One Community program was born.

Each year has been more successful than the last with more volunteers, more sponsors and more children. The program has become something everyone in the neighborhood looks forward to each summer. On Thursday afternoons in the summer, kids come to our front yard for Bug Day, Zoo Day, Fire Department Day, and more. They play games, win prizes, have snacks and make friends with One Community volunteers and hopefully learn something about safety in the process.

Everyone involved in the One Community program has fun and feels a strong sense of belonging. With the help of our partners we have reached out to our neighbors to help develop a safer and stronger community.
